Metal: Nickel. Diameter: 28.0 mm. Edge: Security. Alignment: Medal. Mint: Mumbai (Bombay) and Lahore. Obverse: An Indian tiger standing and facing left. Below in two lines is the legend: INDIA and date. Surrounded by the value in Nagri, English and Urdu. Reverse: Crowned head of the King facing left and surrounded by the legend: GEORGE VI KING EMPEROR. Mintage Years: Mumbai (Bombay): 1947 + Lahore: 1947.

Note: Mumbai (Bombay) Mint issues have a diamond shape below the date. Lahore mint without any mint mark.

The minting of a new rupee was announced on the 24th May 1947. The coin was struck in pure nickel, had a new reverse design and was slightly smaller than the previous Rupee. Issued from the mints of Bombay and Lahore
