I have come across with many people in all this years and many say usi less silly reasons like
1.using TV or any electric equipment,article gets damaged
2. This is completely worst and foolish (u can imaging a appropriate work for this ) even after packing ,article will get damaged if u get any electricle equipment nearer to the article

This is a simple and silly. Misunderstanding has spread like cancer in everyone.......use your common sense guys

If you keep a bulb to the socket and switch it on in presence of article , bulb will diffused r blasts up immediately. And it's same to any electricity k it has such an immense power to Make shortcircuits and diffuse the electricity.
So to avaoid damage people suggest That to cut the power supply totally
